I want to introduce to you today, something a little different. I recently came across a short introductory video about a non-profit community resource center in Kansas City Missouri providing classes and jobs training in sewing-related arts called The Sewing Labs. I thought this was a great piece to share with everyone because of the spirit behind this effort and the obvious need for it…
The Sewing Labs is a not-for-profit, community learning, sewing center started in 2016 in Kansas City that partners with volunteers, donors, businesses, and community members to offer sewing education, as well as social and intellectual opportunities. The Sewing Labs combines these skills with entrepreneurial elements to inspire students.
Not only do the folks at The Sewing Labs teach adults how to sew, they also teach children about sewing, which can help them to live a more creative life at an early age while learning very valuable skills. Sewing skills are in demand.
The Sewing Labs has a tri-fold mission:
- vocational training contributing to economic sustainability
- perpetuate the sewing arts
- formation of supportive community
