Kismet Trinket Box

Kismet Trinket Boxes PDF sewing pattern

I needed a break from dressmaking and also wanted to try using up some of my zipper collection, so I thought I would make a Kismet Trinket Box with a pattern by Sew Sweetness. I have something similar to the large square version which holds my manicure kit, but the zipper is broken so I am going to stitch myself a replacement!

Fiona’s Freeway (Chris W Designs)

I am using the first cork fabric I bought, which is not the lovely leather like fabric you can buy now. Instead it is flexible but thin, without the smooth and pleasant feel of the newer product. However, it was all I could find at the time, and it is pretty, being natural cork with gold flecks. I bought it to make the Fiona’s Freeway bag pattern by Chris W Designs.

You can see the gold flecks better in this picture.

I must say I struggled with stitching around the lid, not my best sewing. It all seemed a bit awkward. Maybe I should have used cotton for my first attempt?

Wonky topstitching!

I got better results when I used my stitch-in-the-ditch foot to get accurate 1/8″ seams and top-stitching on the base, but it was too late for my lid!

From there on it all went better, although I do wish I had used white thread in the bobbin when I top-stitched.  Sigh.

All in all I am pleased with the end result, and would probably make another one, but maybe I could stick with cotton and add a laminate lining?

I have filled it up with all my manicure bits and pieces, and it looks so smart after the tatty thing I have been using!
